More informationMoAD and Litquake present Chronicles of Or
Date: 2025-10-18T15:00:00
Description: From the acclaimed fine artist Harmonia Rosales, a sweeping retelling of African myth illustrated throughout with Rosales’s spectacular paintings. In Chronicles of Ori, her debut book, Rosales retells the African myths she has long treasured, crafting an enthralling epic that spans the birth of the universe to the modern world of colonialism and resistance. She writes of the powerful, temperamental deities called the Orishas; of the founding of Yorubaland by the shrewd leader Oduduwa; of the young heroine Eve, born in a time of violence and despair, who would help her people regain their past splendor; and of shimmering serpents and monstrous shadows who stalk the lands of mortals. Come for the vividly brought to life African myths but don’t miss Rosales’ artwork, featured in MoAD's current exhibition, Unbound: Art, Blackness & the Universe. In conversation with Chief of Curatorial Affairs & Public Programs at MoAD, Key Jo Lee.

More informationAl Wong: Twin Peaks and Screen, Projector and Film
Date: 2025-10-26T13:00:00
Description: An SFAI alum and educator, Al Wong has explored the bounds of the moving image across his career — experimenting with form, technique, and process — and the nature of the viewing experience. This screening will present Wong’s rarely seen 16mm expanded cinema work Screen, Projector and Film (1977), which foregrounds the nature of viewing and transitions the experience into the work’s primary concern. This piece is paired with a theatrical screening of Wong’s Twin Peaks (1977), currently on view in SFMOMA’s Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Atrium. Twin Peaks traces a slow drive around the San Francisco landmark at different times of day over the course of a year. The screenings will be followed by a conversation between Wong and Brett Kashmere, executive director of Canyon Cinema.

Description: What stories emerge when we anchor ourselves in a place and search for new understandings? This collection of short films — all created by SFAI graduates and professors — uses specific locations as launching points for profound exploration. The program centers on several works by Tomonari Nishikawa, whose bold experimentation with celluloid-based techniques produced films of stunning complexity and unexpected perspectives. Nishikawa’s work spans diverse landscapes from San Francisco to various locations throughout Japan. These pieces are complemented by films from Lynn Marie Kirby, Kerry Laitala, Toney Merritt, Michael Rudnick, and Al Wong — each artist finding revelations within local landscapes.

The ball is now in the court of state and local governments to fill the gap. This program will explore how SPUR and partners are responding to the shifting federal landscape, what new policies and coalitions are emerging at the state and regional level, and what role we can all play in pushing forward climate action, disaster resilience, and equity when Washington turns its back.
